Group Coaching for Mothers with Teen Sons

5 Tuesdays, February 4 – March 3, 2020

10:00 – 11:30 am Mountain time on ZOOM Conference

“We who care today about the lives of boys and men have an

immediate and profound mission, inherent in our position as mothers

and fathers, teachers, mentors, citizens and friends.  That mission

is nothing less than to help each boy develop into a creative spirit,

trustworthy friend, moral leader, and meaningful man.

Our mission is nothing less than to protect and nurture

the future of humanity.”     Michael Gurian

Session One – Stages of Development in Teen Boys

In this session we will look at the developmental stages of the teen years, which includes the intellectual, emotional and social development happening in teen boys.  We will highlight some of key developments and challenges of each of these areas as well as the overall developmental “job”, one could say, of the teen years.  And we will discuss some parenting tips to help you with your son during these powerful but tumultuous years.

Session Two – The Changing Mother/Son Relationship

In session two we will look at the changing nature of the mother/son relationship.  We will look at the things our sons need from us that they aren’t telling us.  Also we will discuss specific lessons and messages that a mother imparts to her son to strengthen him and help shape his character. There are many ways that the role a mother plays in her teen son’s life continues to be an important and strong influence on his developing sense of himself, even while he is trying to separate from her.

Session Three- Navigating the Influence of Technology

In this session we will share some research about the influence of technology on our sons and some facts about the on-line culture that is shaping our adolescents.  Parents need to understand the prevalence and the addictive nature of both gaming and pornography on our sons and realize how common these traps are in today’s on-line world. We will talk about setting healthy boundaries in the home and having on-going discussions about the use of technology as essential parts of helping our sons create good screen habits.

Session Four- Dealing with Social Media in Teen Culture

In this session we will look at the way social media is affecting culture and family life.  Super important is how social media re-enforces the peer orientation of our children that is prevalent in our society.  Overly strong peer orientation turns our children away from family values and respect for parental input and advice, and causes them to align with the values and norms of their peers above all else.  This session will include a look at some research on the effects of social media on the developing brain and, more importantly, on family life.

Session Five –  Positive Discipline with Teens

In this closing session we will discuss some ways to discipline your teen son that focus on preserving relationship and connection and which support his willingness to cooperate rather than trigger his counterwill.  Discipline that focuses on preserving your connection with your son has longer term solutions in mind.  Positive discipline, in the context of this group coaching class, aims at encouraging you to avoid immediately reacting to behaviors that are unacceptable.

Instead we will look at four different approaches that can be incorporated into how you discipline your son which may help preserve your connection in the long term while addressing the immediate issue at hand.  There will also be a time for questions and sharing on any other topics from the group.

Last we will discuss different options for continuing in the Group Coaching setting for those who would like on-going support.
